I first went to Amsterdam in 2007 and the highlight of that particular trip was the discovery of the Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple which is paradoxically, or perhaps that is bizarrely, located on the edge of that cities infamous Red Light District.

Enabled by budget airline Flybe with its cheap and direct link between Amsterdam and my home town of Southampton I have since made ten return visits to this fascinating and quite unique city. Perversely it is actually cheaper and takes no longer for me to get to Amsterdam than to London which is only 80 miles up the road from here.

Click on any picture left to enter a Gallery of 28 pictures featuring Amsterdam just "as it is"; sometimes scruffy, sometimes baffling but always enthralling.

For my gallery of another 28 pictures featuring the Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple and their Buddha Birthday celebrations and parade through the streets of Amsterdam on 17th May 2008 please click here.
