DHARMA THUNDER IN THE UK

Horai, literally "Dharma Thunder" was founded by Zuiken S. Inagaki (1885-1981), Hisao’s father, and it seeks to reveal the essence of Shinran's teaching from the standpoint of the spontaneous working of the Power of Amida's Vow.

As a consequence of my acceptance earlier this year of Rev Hisao’s Inagaki’s invitation to become UK Representative for Horai, I now have on file the draft of fifty pieces of original Dharma poetry written by Hisao, first in Chinese, then translated into English and finally gathered together under the collective title of “Thorn Bush”.

震法(しんほう)雷(らい)
Shaking the Dharma-world

茫々六道輪廻間 (茫々(ぼうぼう)たる六道(ろくどう) 輪廻(りんね)の間(かん))
In the vast stretches of Samsara in the six realms,
難知難見難遭遇 (難知(なんち) 難(なん)見(けん) 難遭遇(なんそうぐう))
Difficult it is to know, see and encounter
最勝無比名號法 (最勝(さいしょう)無比(むひ)の名号法(みょうごうほう))

The supreme and unparalleled Dharma – Myôgyô, Amida’s Name,
信樂受持難中難(信楽(しんぎょう)受持(じゅじ)すること 難中(なんちゅう)の難(なん))
Which it is difficult to believe in and receive, difficulty of all difficulties.
法界縁起震法雷(法界(ほっかい)縁起(えんぎ)して 法(ほう)雷(らい)を震(ふる)わし)
As the Dharma-realm, relegated to causal relationships, makes the Dharma Thunder (Horai) peal, 光明普照十方界 (光明(こうみょう)普(あまね)く照(てら)す十方界(じっぽうかい))

The Light shines pervasively throughout the worlds of the ten directions.
扶桑末法五濁時(扶桑(ふそう)の末法(まっぽう) 五濁(ごじょく)の時(とき))
In Japan, during the period of the five defilements when the Dharma is at a low ebb,
雷音法雨驚耳目(雷音(らいおん)法雨(ほうう) 耳目(じもく)を驚(おどろ)かす)
The thunderous sound and the Dharma-rain surprise people’s ears and eyes.
漢詩傳承三千年(漢詩(かんし)の伝承(でんしょう) 三千年(さんぜんねん))

3,000 years have elapsed since Chinese poems were first produced.
西蕃月氏妙法典(西蕃(せいばん) 月(げっ)氏(し)の妙(みょう)法典(ほうでん))
Scriptures of the Wonderful Dharma compiled in Western Asia,
言々句々弾心琴(言々句々(ごんごんくく) 心(しん)琴(きん)を弾(だん)ず)
Each and every phrase touches the cords of our minds.
今日有縁法兄姉(今日(こんにち) 有縁(うえん)の法(ほう)兄(けい)姉(し))

I beg all Dharma brothers and sisters of today who have close ties to us,
昂揚詩情汲法水(詩情(しじょう)を昂揚(こうよう)し法(ほう)水(すい)を汲(く)む)
With the heightening of your poetic pathos, to bail up the Dharma water.
體得無上微妙法(無上(むじょう)微妙(みみょう)の法(ほう)を体得(たいとく)し)
Realizing the highest, supreme Dharma,

傳持後世盡未来 (後世(こうせい)に伝(でん)持(じ)して 未来(みらい)を尽(つく)さん)
We will transmit it to our later generations in all future ages.
歓喜讃仰彌陀尊(弥陀(みだ)尊(そん)を歓喜(かんぎ)賛仰(さんごう)したてまつる)
To Amida. the Revered One, we rejoicingly offer our adoration.
